5 openings great speakers use.

The first seconds are when attention is highest, and easiest to lose. Here are five openings that use them, each with a line you can steal for Monday.

Many presentations really start at sentence three.

The first two are “Hi, I'm…”, “Today I'm going to present…” or “Sorry, I'm a bit nervous.” Cut them. Start where it gets interesting.

1

Say the point first

Your conclusion in the first sentence. Reasons after.

“We should move the launch to March. Here's why.”

Why it works: A busy person who only hears one sentence still gets your message.

Try it: “[What you want]. Here's why.”

2

Ask a question they're already thinking

Not a quiz. A real question about their work, that you answer later.

“What would we do with two extra weeks on this project?”

Why it works: A question opens a gap in their head. They keep listening to close it.

Try it: “What would [they] do if [the thing you're about to fix]?”

3

Start inside a moment

One small real scene. A time, a person, what happened.

“Last Tuesday at 4 pm, our biggest client called. She had one question.”

Why it works: People can picture a moment. They can't picture a summary.

Try it: “Last [day], [person] [did one specific thing].”

4

Show what changed

Something is different now. Then the problem, then your fix.

“Since March, support tickets have doubled. Same team. Something has to give.”

Why it works: Nobody wants a fix until they feel the problem.

Try it: “Since [when], [what changed]. [Why that's a problem now].”

5

Paint the result

Let them see the outcome before you explain the plan.

“Imagine closing this quarter without one weekend of overtime.”

Why it works: They start wanting the result, so they listen for how to get there.

Try it: “Imagine [the good result, for them].”

Pause before your first word.

Breathe out, look up, count to two. Then start. The pause feels longer to you than to them.

Now say it out loud.

Reading an opening is easy. Saying it so it lands is the hard part. Melowy is your personal speaking coach: say your opening, get one specific fix, and hear the difference in take 2.
